Angelo Debarre, Moreno, Ninine Garcia and Tchavolo Schmitt are guitarists who carry on the gypsy jazz tradition of the musician Django Reinhardt. This documentary follows the four guitarists as they move from place to place, capturing vignettes of their life: how a community preserves its way of life, how they pass on their knowledge to new learners and how they approach the problems their community faces with characteristic humour and insight. Through all their travels and travails, music and the joy of playing reign supreme.

Director: Jacqueline Gozland | Documentary | 65 min
Sultana Daoud, better known Reinette l’Oranaise, was a repository of ArabAndalus
traditional music. The Algerian-born singer, who went blind at the age of
two, was urged by her mother to take up music and went on to be hailed as the
“Queen of Judeo-Arab music”. Whether in concert – at New Morning, in Paris – or in
her interviews, she reminds us that music was her refuge and her defence against
the heartbreak of exile.

“Les Chansons D’amour”
Director: Benoît Jacquot, Louise Narboni | Comedy, Drama | 144 min
Ismail, Julie and Alice live happily together, an ideal state that is shattered when one
of them dies. Those left behind must deal with their loss and their feelings and, as
time goes by, must learn to open themselves up to the possibility of new loves and
new relationships. Set in Paris, a city echoing with love songs, this musical shows
that, fortunately for us, the old song which goes,”les chan-sonsd’a-mour finissent
maaaal… en gé-né-ral” (love songs don’t usually end well) need not always be true.

in Residence of the Berliner Philharmoniker – Karl-Heinz Steffens will conduct Béla
Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto and Peter Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. The two
compositions have the reputation of being “fateful” works by their creators. Bartók
wrote his Second Violin Concerto in 1937–38 at the urging of his compatriot violinist
Zoltán Székely, at a time when he was increasingly the target of defamatory attacks
by the right-wing national press. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth – which opens the trilogy of
the so-called “Fate Symphonies” by the Russian composer – was written at a time of
personal crisis.
